I love GOURDS! I love dirty gourds, clean gourds, green gourds....all gourds!! I even love the way they smell! Yes they do have a smell and I love it!
I guess that is why I have been called "Gourdqueen" for over 20 years.

This is a pic of some of my dirty gourds out back in the "gourd shack". How many do I have? I have no clue! I have them everywhere!
Where did I get them you ask? Everywhere!!! I live down in south Mississippi and have driven as far as Kansas to bring home a trailer full of gourds.
I met these folks in Kansas on ebay! Yep I bought their gourds on ebay for years and finally decided to drive up there and buy a BUNCH!
We became great friends and I even named her the "GourdFairy". Her gourds are the most beautiful I have ever seen and I have seen a lot of gourds.

Sooooooo if you are ever interested in buying any gourds ya gotta check out "Kgourd" on ebay.
She has some auctions up now for the most perfect coyote gourds I have ever seen and they are cleaned. Coyote gourds are the hardest gourds there are to clean.

All Guts Are Not Created Equal!

Well they're not! Especially gourd guts!
You can see in these pics that there was not a gourd pod for the seeds in the second gourd.
They were contained in a papery membrane and some loose in the gourd. Compare pics from earlier posts of the first gourd.
I much prefer the pod and so does my nose!!!

Here the insides of each gourd have been covered to make the gourd stronger.

Once I finish the first gourd I will start on the second.
I am doing a Sunflower theme for the first but I don't know yet what I will do on the second.

Two Clean Gourds

Gourds are clean and I have started working on the larger one.

I cut one side out with a small gourd saw.

This is the seed pod that was inside the gourd or guts as I call them.

Some seeds fell out of the seed pod.

Now the other side has been cut out I have a basket.

My favorite time of year is Fall but I truly love the aromas and colors of Spring.
I have been working in my yard for the past few weeks
and it's coming along nicely
but I still have a lot of work to do.

I joined Arts A Flutter, a really cool selling site. They show their new wares on the first of each month.
I am very excited about selling there, so I hope you all will drop by and check it out!
I made a gourd stocking for my first listing that includes a surprise gift for the buyer.

This month I couldn't decide what I wanted to create for the Pfatt Marketplace, Halloween or Christmas or both.
With the cool nights and not so hot days we have been having reminded me that Fall had arrived. So I decided to do Fall pumpkins. I love pumpkins and I love making my gourds into pumpkins. Sounds kind of silly, seeing how gourds and pumpkins are in the same family! Geez, let's not let me get started on that!!!
I have three Whimsical Pumpkin Gourdie-Do's that will be perfect for decorating from now till Thanksgiving.

Five Year Survivor!

In November of 2004 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. That thing that only happens to other people had happened to me. I can't even describe the feeling that ran though my body when my Dr. told me. I was sitting in the examining room looking at him while he started to explain things to me. All I heard was that sound that adults make in a Charlie Brown cartoon and I felt the tears roll down my cheek. I don't even remember how long I sat in my car before leaving.

The Dr. had already remove the lump but had to go in again to scrape around where the lump was and also remove lymph nodes from under my right arm to test for cancer. It all came back fine! By the middle of December I was having my first chemo treatment. That was the longest three hours of my life!

Then on Christmas day my parents took my husband and I to New Orleans and Bay St. Louis. It snowed in New Orleans on THAT Christmas Day!! Amazing.....or was it a sign? I didn't care I was with my family! I knew my hair would fall out while I was in New Orleans so I had a friend cut my hair really short and thinned it out so when it fell out it wouldn't be so hard to deal with.
I didn't think it would bother me but OMG, I broke down. I'm not sure if it was the hair or the fact that I really hadn't cried yet.

The treatments were long and tiring and I hit many bumps along the way, with a week long hospital stay and a couple of ER visits. But finally after chemo and radiation, in September of 2005 I was told I was cancer free!!!

The removal of lymph nodes from my right arm has left me with a bad case of Lympheda. I have swelling and pain in my arm and hand. I get so mad, as I am no longer able to do so many things that I use to do. And yes I get over being mad and think how grateful I am just to be here!

The pic below is the only picture taking of me during my treatments. With me are the two wonderful men who saved my life. My surgeon and my oncologist, God bless you both!

So I finally hit the big FIVE year anniversary that all breast cancer survivors strive for!

I can't believe Halloween is so close!! It seems like only yesterday I was thinking about summer coming and LEAVING. It's not as hot outside and the leaves have started turning brown. A sure sign that my favorite time of year is just around the corner!

Can you believe I worked on these two at the same time? They are so different except for the Halloween colors. You can find them on ebay.

A really cool friend named the witch, Harlequina, it's perfect!! She does that alot! She comes up with just the perfect name for my gourds. She "gets" me.....and my art!

Why Do My Gourds Torment Me?

I always have more than one gourd project going on at one time. So I was trying to get some finished when I looked over at my shelf with all my stuff on it and saw this gazing ball stand. I had to pull it out and now I know what it will be. It's like it was standing there finished!!!
Now if that wasn't bad enough, last night for some reason while I was laying in the bed I was thinking about a gourd I had cut to make a basket, two years ago.
I could not figure out what I wanted to do with it. Well I saw it last night and I can't wait to work on it.

I have been married to my best friend for 29 marvelous years! It really doesn't seem that long.
When I walked into the living room I found a dozen red roses and a beautiful card waiting for me. He even arranged the roses himself!
They are on the mantel with my favorite Halloween piece that was made by Gourdqueen.....Hahahahahhaha!
Thank you Johnny for the 29 incredible years, I look forward to the next 29!

Where Have You Been?!

I ask the question and I'm not sure I can even answer it!!!
Time seems to zoom by and leaves me standing scratching my head, wondering, "What do you do everyday?".

Then I go outside and see my yard and know that I am the one that made it so pleasing to the eye! This is the first year since my cancer, almost five years go, that I have been able to work in my yard. I have always loved working in the yard, even cutting the grass is a pleasure. I still have a long way to go to get it back into shape, but it will get there one day.

The best was the birth of our second grandchild on May 18th. We have a handsome grandson, Cameron, who will be three June 9th and now a beautiful granddaughter, Lilly Abigail.
We only were able to see her for a short time as we had to travel to Arkansas to make sure our son Brandon was doing ok as he was hospitalized for a few days. He is doing fine now resting at home.
I didn't get any pics of our incredible daughter-in-law, Nicki, whom we love like our very own. She takes such amazing care of her little family.

Now as for me, I have some sort of sinus crud that makes me very unhappy. All I do is snort and hack! This will pass and I will be back to working on my gourds!

Some people know she is my mom but many don't as we travel in different circles, on the internet that is.
She is an art doll artist and does full body sculpts where I am a primitive artist and work with gourds.
I love it when someone realizes we are related and they say, "Bonnie is YOUR Mother?". The only problem is they can't see me strut when I say, "YEAH!".

Shih Tzu Town

That's what they call it here! We love our Shih Tzu pups! We have 8 dogs total. Seven are Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu mixes and one Border Collie mix. There is never a dull moment, except for nap time.
We also have two cats, three ferrets and an aquarium.
Here they are visiting with the neighbors.

Today I took three to the groomer to get their summer cuts. Sometimes I take all seven at one time but that is a chore for sure.
Clyde, the black and white in the back is ignoring me. He did that on the ride home and will do it for a day or so. He's the oldest, so he rules.

This is Clyde before his hair cut. He is my heart and is a full blooded Shih Tzu. He was with me during my Cancer battle and never left my side. It didn't matter if I stayed in bed all day, he was there. He would sit and watch me, wherever I was.
That's a special bond that can never be broken.
This is Boo before his hair cut. I didn't have a pic of Maks, who is the prankster. We call them the twins. Haha. They are about the same age but not related and are both a Shih Tzu Poodle mix.

Just thought I would share what I do with my SPARE time!
The other four will be going to the groomer Thursday and I will share pics of them.
Now off to play with my gourds!

SpookyTime Jingles April Update

New updates for SpookyTime Jingles go up tonight at the stroke of twelve. I know there will be lots of new and exciting finds!
All I have this month is "Sir Wrathbones". Yep you have seen him already. He made his debut March 31st on EHAG Emporium. I'm sorry to say no one wanted him.
So I thought what the hey, maybe a little move would help. I guess it couldn't hurt, right?
Trying to find that person who just can't live without one of your works of art can be tricky!
So search is what I will do!
But really how could anyone not love this face!

Tools Of The Trade

I did not get those three apple gourds finished in time for the PFATT Markeplace, which by the way you need to go visit all the new Spring offerings.
The trip to Arkansas really drained me. I think I was running on adrenalin after I got home, which ran out really quick!
I did decide they would be birdhouses. So outside I went with all the needed tools in hand.
**A face mask to protect me from the gourd dust, which can and has caused me some sick days in the past!
**A drill, with the proper hole bit to cut the openings.
**And finally a gourd scraper to get all the seeds and gourd membrane out through that tiny hole!

So there you have it. My famous pic of unfinished and pushed aside gourds.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter weekend!
Yes thank you I did! I loaded up and left here Friday headed to Arkansas which is a 5 1/2 hour drive. Spent the best long weekend with my son, daughter-in-law and grandson, Cameron.
Here is Cameron, who will be 3 this coming June.
He is the apple of my eye!!

After arriving home Tuesday afternoon I realized I had to get back to work!
The PFATT Marketplace was calling my name, wanting gourds! Did I have anything ready.......well no! That would have been much too organized and way too easy!!!!
I was totally clueless as to what I was going to do. So I headed to the "Gourd Shack", which is located in my back yard.

This place is a mess and needs my attention, but that will have to wait. I needed ideas and I needed them fast!

Look what I found! Apple gourds. I haven't played with these in a while!
So I gathered up a few and gave them a good cleaning.

Now they are in the dungeon sitting on my work table............

I wonder what they will become?

A Day Of Painting

I am finally painting this guy! This piece has fought me from the get-go. I could see what I wanted in the gourd but the shape wasn't as perfect as I thought, perfect as in proportions. The shape screamed skull and that was sort of easy, ok maybe not!
When I finished SKULpting the face and started on the hat all hell broke loose. The top of the gourd was not rounded for a hat. After fighting with it I pushed him aside.
That was two months ago. He has stared at me with those empty eye sockets for long enough!! It was time for him to become.............
THIS!

He has a new hat, a bow tie and eye balls. I can't wait to see him painted!

Yesterday Was A Gourd Day!

Around here that means a Good Day!
I finally managed to get some Gourd work done. Some of you might remember the skeleton head I was working on a couple of months ago. He really was not going the way I wanted so he was pushed aside.
I pulled him back out, tore off the stupid hat I had made for him and made this one. Much better! The proportions of the gourd are giving me problems but I think I have it figured out now.
I also have a few other pieces in the works. A couple of totems, Santa ornaments and three others with hats.
I guess the next time you see them they will be completed.......I hope!

Yesterday also brought a box of coyote gourds from Kansas. The best gourds in the world are grown in Kansas and can be found on Ebay under Kgourd, she has some available now. My best friend Dianna grows them and I love digging in a box from her because she always has a surprise for me! My pups enjoy it too.
I am such a brat when it comes to gourds.

The Penny Tree Auction

I am a member of a wonderful Ebay group called PFATT. Not only are they all very talented but they also have the kindest hearts around. One of our members, Penny McAllister was recently diagnosed with Acute Leukemia.
So in her honor this group of ladies banned together and made ornaments to cover a beautiful feather tree which we call "The Penny Tree".
The Penny Tree auction started tonight and the final auction price will be donated to The Leukemia & Lumphoma Society, Inc.-Alabama Chapter.

Tonight is SpookyTime Jingles February reveal! Now you have to wait until midnight but I promise it will be worth the wait....heck it's always worth the wait!
Many of you have cheered me on while I have pieced together my gourds for this month and I have so enjoyed it. But I think it was really mean of these guys refusing to show their faces until today. I am very sorry but what is a gourdqueen to do?
So now that they are cooperating here they are.

I again want to thank Sharon, autumnforest, for coming up with some really cool names. You will have to wait until SpookyTime Jingles is updated to see their names.

Here are four Christmas Elf ornaments and a Halloween Totem. I've started painting them....my favorite part!!
I have someone who will be naming these guys for me, Sharon, Autumnforest, made a comment about names she would come up with for my gourds......I reeled her in ! I can never come up with names and short stories, like some artist do. Now I will have some really cool names!!!!

This guy isn't finished but I think I know where I'm headed with him. Time will tell.

It's About Time!

It sure is!! I have been away from my work in the dungeon way toooo long! Life, it always trumps me being in my favorite place, doing what I love.

So what am I working on now? Wabbits! What? Oh the Skelleton, he's sitting on my work table glaring at me. We just weren't seeing eye to eye so we decided to take a break from each other.

Now for the rabbit. I had to do some combining of gourds for this piece. A friend of mine who lives in Kansas grows the most amazing gourds. This dipper gourd had a twisted handle and to me looked like a rabbit's ears wrapped around each other.
I didn't like the size of the bottom of the gourd so I snapped the handle off and attached it to another gourd.

After sculpting the rabbit's face I decided the ears were too long, so again I snapped the handle off.
With an exacto knife I cut it down to size and reattached it to the head.
I then added a big foil bow to the base of the ears.

Now my rabbit is ready to be painted. I mixed too much clay so I made a rabbit ornament that will also get painted .

WIP Continues

I finally found time to work on my piece. I have to get it finished by Wednesday. But I don't see a problem with getting it done.
It looks so goofy in this pic!!

Now it looks like it might turn out the way I want it too!
Now to permanently secure it to the base and finish a few more details and I can begin painting him. WooHoooooo!

Too Many Holes!

NO, not in my head! In this gourd that I haven't touched in two days. I hate when other things have to be done and I can't get to my dungeon!!!
I had to drill another hole so now I have to plug the old one.

Didn't your mother ever tell you not to stick your finger where it didn't belong? This time I had to.

Now the hole has been repaired. I had to tape the other hole so his guts wouldn't keep falling out.
Back to work.......

Wip-Day 2

This is how my Wip progressed Sunday. First the piece has to have some weight to the base so I did a mosaic with beach glass. Did not turn out the way I had it envisioned.

He had to have a hat, so out came the papier mache. I always have to have other pieces to mache, so I decided on these little....possibly ornaments?

I'm not too sure, but this is not turning out at all how I planned!
The papier mache hat has to dry so I will work on the smaller gourds today.

I am starting a new piece today that has been in my head for a few months. The idea came from this gourd that was sitting on top of a gourd pile. When I looked at it I knew what it should be.
I will try to show my daily progress. Just maybe it will turn into what I have planned, which many times is not the case!

2010 And I'm In A Complete Tail Spin!!

The ideas are flowing and I don't know which direction to go! That's a good thing, right?!
First thing was to get pieces ready for The PFATT Marketplace and SpookyTime Jingles. Here are some pieces I have been working on.
SNOWMEN!!!

They are almost finished and I will start on some Santa's and something for Halloween. FUN FUN FUN!!!

The much needed break I took during the holidays really rejuvenated me. I loved spending time with my family.
I know you want to see some pics of my wonderful family! Here they are.....

This is my baby boy Brandon with his baby boy Cameron. Boys and their toys!

Nicki, the best daughter-in-law I could have ever wished for showing her pooching little belly. We are having a GIRL in May!!!!! What a special Christmas gift!

Nicki's five Gourdqueen dated ornaments. One for each year she and Brandon have been married. They will continue to get one a year. She made me want to cry when she said she was going to get a small tree just for my ornaments....I told you she was special!

January 2nd was my birthday and we had a table of fourteen at our favorite Mexican restaurant. Cameron is enjoying the whipped cream topped sugar tortillas they served me. He also sang his own special birthday song for me:

Snow Is Gone!

Well it was pretty while it lasted! I so wish it would snow A LOT and stay around for a few days, just once!

It's a major treat to see it snowing down here in southern Mississippi. When it does snow it's not a lot and it doesn't hang around for long. I couldn't get any good pics as it's night time here now but hopefully in the morning I can get some really good pics. That is if it's still here!

Here are two of my pups feeling very frisky in the cool night air. They really don't know what to think about the cold white stuff!
Our wreath on the gate looks very festive.

GOURDS!!!! Yeah I know, I'm a freak, but a harmless one! You would not believe how many raw gourds I have. I am a greedy little Gourdqueen!
I get so excited when a box of gourds arrive. I can't wait to look at each one and then put them in their special containers. Hey it doesn't take much!
This is the latest box I received. They came from Kansas from a very dear friend who grows the most incredible gourds in the world. You can find her on Ebay under seller name Kgourd.

These are coyote gourds and small bottle gourds. I use these for making ornaments.

These are cannonball gourds and I use these for making Gourdie-Do's.
Here are a few of my supplies that go along with turning my gourds into whatever comes to mind.

Humpty Gourd Santa

If I could write fun poems I would write one that would be titled, "Humpty Gourd Santa". I'm not sure it would be "G" rated! The words that came out of my sugar coated mouth were not for sensitive ears.
He was sitting on the mantel and I picked him up and simply DROPPED him!!! I can put him back together but it won't be pretty. I have been wanting a gourd Santa!
